Another DIY idea?
Another DIY idea?

Not everything you hear about electricity is true. Some of it’s old-school wisdom that’s been passed down through the generations... and some of it’s just plain shocking misinformation.

At Ace Electric, we’ve heard it all, ok, most of it; sometimes right before a homeowner shows us the results of their latest “DIY experiment.” So, grab your voltage tester (or maybe just a cup of coffee) and let’s bust a few common myths before they leave you in the dark, or worse, fried like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Myth #1: “Low voltage means safe voltage.”

Truth: Even low-voltage systems can pack a punch.

Just because something runs at 12 or 24 volts doesn’t mean it can’t cause harm. Sure, it’s less likely to zap you than a 120V outlet, but improper handling or damaged wiring can still cause shocks, burns, or even start a fire. Think of it like chili peppers; just because it’s “mild” doesn’t mean it won’t burn if you’re careless.

👉 Ace Tip: Treat every wire with respect: voltage may vary, but danger doesn’t.

Myth #2: “Rubber shoes make you shockproof.”

Truth: Only if your shoes are made from 100% pure rubber... and you’re standing on a dry, insulated surface... and Mercury’s in retrograde.

Okay, maybe not that last part: but the point stands: most rubber shoes contain synthetic blends or moisture-absorbing materials that won’t stop a current from passing through you.

👉 Ace Tip: Don’t rely on your sneakers for protection; rely on proper grounding and GFCI outlets.

🔌 Myth #3: “My breaker will protect me from all shocks.”

Truth: Breakers protect your circuits, not your body.

Your breaker’s job is to prevent your wires from overheating and catching fire, not to stop an electric shock from running through you. That’s why GFCI outlets (the ones with the “Test” and “Reset” buttons) are required in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoors. They cut power when they detect even a tiny imbalance.

👉 Ace Tip: If you’ve got an older home without GFCIs, it’s time to upgrade. Your heart will thank you. Literally.

Myth #4: “Power strips can handle anything.”

Truth: They’re not bottomless buffets for plugs.

That power strip under your desk may look innocent, but every one of those sockets still connects to the same 15- or 20-amp circuit in your wall. Overload it with space heaters, holiday lights, or too many gadgets, and you’ve got yourself a fire hazard with a side of melted plastic.

👉 Ace Tip: For high-draw devices (like heaters, air fryers, or gaming PCs), plug directly into the wall, or better yet, have Ace Electric install a dedicated circuit.

Myth #5: “If it’s off, it’s safe.”

Truth: Switches lie.

Just because you flipped a switch or turned off a breaker doesn’t mean there’s no power. Some wires stay energized even when the fixture they feed is “off.” That’s why electricians use voltage testers every single time, because guessing wrong isn’t an option.

👉 Ace Tip: Always test before you touch. Or better yet, call us before you shock yourself trying to “just tighten a screw.”

Myth #6: “DIY fixes save money.”

Truth: Only if you don’t count hospital bills—or calling us to undo it later.

We get it. You watched a few YouTube videos, bought a voltage tester, and feel like you’ve got this. But electrical work isn’t just about connecting wires: it’s about load balancing, code compliance, and safety standards that protect your home long after you flip the switch.

👉 Ace Tip: If it’s more complex than changing a bulb, it’s worth a call. We’ll fix it fast, safely, and correctly the first time.

Myth #7: “Electricians are boring.”

Truth: We bring the spark AND the jokes.

Who else can rewire your panel, find your short, and still hit you with a solid dad joke while they’re at it? At Ace Electric, we take our craft seriously- but not ourselves. Because when you love what you do, it shows (and sometimes glows).

👉 Ace Tip: Ask your electrician for a joke during your next service call. We’re charged up with good ones.

Final Thoughts

Electricity isn’t something to fear - but it’s definitely something to respect. The more you know, the safer (and brighter) your home will be.

💡 Don’t gamble with myth; call Ace Electric for the facts, the fixes, and maybe a dad joke or two along the way.
