When the Oklahoma chill sets in, space heaters become household heroes, but they can also be hidden hazards. Every winter, Ace Electric in Stillwater responds to calls from homeowners who have accidentally overloaded outlets or melted cords trying to stay warm. Let’s make sure your heater keeps you cozy, not costly.

1. Don’t Overload Outlets

Space heaters draw a lot of power, often more than 1,500 watts. Plugging one into a power strip or extension cord is like trying to funnel a firehose through a garden hose. We’ve seen Stillwater homes where overloaded outlets left scorch marks or even tripped the main breaker.

Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet.

2. Avoid Cheap Extension Cords

That $5 orange cord from the hardware bin might seem convenient, but it’s not rated for continuous high-current loads. One customer in Perkins learned this the hard way after an overheated cord melted into the carpet.

✅ If you must use an extension cord, use a heavy-duty, grounded one rated for 15 amps or higher.

3. Give Your Heater Some Space

Keep your heater at least three feet away from furniture, bedding, or curtains. We’ve seen homes where heaters tucked under desks or beside couches caused serious smoke damage in minutes.

✅ Think “three feet for safety.”

4. Check for Damaged Cords

Inspect your heater’s cord for cracks or frays before plugging it in. Even a small tear can expose wires and cause arcing, which is a major fire hazard.

If it’s damaged, replace it. Don’t tape it.

5. Don’t Run Heaters Overnight

Falling asleep with a space heater running may sound tempting on cold nights, but it’s not worth the risk.

Use it to preheat your space, then shut it off before bed.

6. Upgrade Old Wiring

Older Stillwater homes, especially those built before the 1980s, often have wiring not designed for modern electric loads. Running multiple heaters or appliances can trip breakers or worse.

Ace Electric can inspect your system and upgrade outlets or circuits for safer heating.

7. Use GFCI Outlets in Bathrooms or Garages

Moisture and electricity don’t mix. If you’re using space heaters in damp areas, GFCI outlets can prevent deadly shocks.

Ask Ace to install or test your GFCIs before winter fully hits.

Stay Warm, Stay Safe

Space heaters are great tools when used wisely. A quick inspection can prevent winter fires, power issues, or worse.

🔥 If you’re using space heaters this winter, make sure your wiring can handle the load. Ask Ace Electric for a quick safety check today.
