A Parent’s Guide to Keeping Kids Safe Around Electricity (Without Losing Your Cool)
Ah, summer. The kids are out of school, the AC’s on full blast, and suddenly your house feels like a cross between a zoo and a science experiment. 🐒🔬 But while summer’s full of sunshine and sprinkler fun, it’s also the season when electrical accidents sneak in like popsicles on your good couch. 😅
So before your little ones turn your living room into a “power lab,” let’s talk summer electrical safety for kids.
Curiosity + Outlets = Yikes!
Kids are naturally curious (and weirdly excellent at finding the one thing they shouldn’t touch). That’s why summer electrical safety starts with the basics:
🔌 Cover your outlets – Kids love poking things. Toys, forks, fingers… Don’t risk it. Use tamper-resistant outlet covers or safety plugs.
🚫 Don’t overload power strips – That bedroom "charging station" for tablets, phones, and 16 mystery gadgets? Dangerous. Spread out charging and avoid daisy-chaining cords.
📱 Cords are NOT jump ropes – If your child thinks your charger is part of their next obstacle course, it’s time for a chat.
Pool + Electricity = Double Yikes!
Water and electricity are not BFFs. If you have a pool, hose, slip-n-slide, or kids who are constantly soaked:
Keep electronics far away from water. That means no phones near the pool, no Bluetooth speakers floating on inflatables (yes, people do that), and definitely no running extension cords to the backyard sprinkler.
Use GFCIs (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters) on all outdoor outlets. These shut off electricity the moment something goes wrong—like when water and wiring mix.
"I'm Helping!" – Supervised DIY Only!
We love a young helper-in-training! But if your child wants to “fix” the light switch or “upgrade” the ceiling fan with Legos… hold up. Teach them the magic of electricity without letting them near the live stuff.
Fun safe alternatives:
A battery-powered science kit 🔋
A DIY paper circuit activity
Coloring sheets about electricity (Ask us—we’ve got some!) 🎨
Teach the "What Ifs"
It’s never too early to teach kids:
What to do in a power outage
Why they should never touch downed wires
Why calling Ace Electric is way better than DIY-ing with duct tape and glitter
We’re talking about practical, lifesaving knowledge here—not just avoiding zaps!
Let’s Keep Summer Safe and Shocking-Free
Summer should be about fun, not fires. If you’re worried your outlets, panels, or outdoor wiring can’t handle the summer chaos, Ace Electric is one call away.
We’ll help you make your home safe, cool, and kid-proof—with zero drama and maximum peace of mind.
